We’re thrilled to share that CORP Trails has received a “Department of Dirt Microgrant” from Wisconsin Bike Fed, with a matching contribution from the Chris Kegel Foundation! We’re especially grateful that Bike Fed supported both projects we submitted, helping us improve the trail experience today while planning for the future.
Making Quarry Park Easier to Navigate
Ever get lost riding at Quarry Park? Confused about which trails are for hikers, bikers, or both? You’re not alone! Even the trail steward reportedly gets turned around from time to time.
Quarry Park’s dense network of trails, inconsistent signage, and mix of bike-only and multi-use trails can make navigation challenging. Grant funding will help us purchase and install new directional signs and trail-use markers, along with updated maps. These improvements will make it easier for mountain bikers, hikers, and dog walkers to find their way, better understand which trails they can use, and enjoy the park together.
Counting Trail Use to Guide Future Investments
CORP Trail’s second grant project takes a data-driven approach to trail planning to develop a pilot program using low-cost, homebuilt trail counters to better understand how our trail networks are being used.
Trail counters will anonymously record the number of trail users passing by, giving us valuable information about trail use and demand. Data collected will help CORP Trails make more informed decisions about maintenance, trail improvements, volunteer efforts, and future development.
Commercial trail counters can cost $1,000 each, so we’re taking a more affordable approach by building our own for approximately $84 per unit, which we hope can serve as a model for other trail organizations.
Thank you to Wisconsin Bike Fed and the Chris Kegel Foundation for their generous support!
